UPA développement international
Farmer-to-farmer cooperation

On January 8, 1993, the Union des producteurs agricoles (UPA) created UPA Développement international (UPA DI). Promoting a cooperative model “from farmer to farmer”, this organization works at the international level, building on the expertise of the UPA.

UPA DI’s mission is to promote the family farm as a model of sustainable agriculture by supporting democratic peasant organizations, collective marketing systems for agricultural products and such other initiatives that could help to structure agriculture in developing countries.

Presently, UPA DI works in partnership with over 30 peasant organizations in Africa and in Latin America. Against a

background of trade globalization, where challenges abound, the development of agriculture is necessarily conditional upon the globalization of solidarity – and farmers around the world have every interest in helping each other. The more that farmers, through their collective organizations, give themselves the means to defend and promote their interests, the more the world’s agriculture will be better protected and more sustainable.
