DIVERSIFIED PRODUCTIONS
Among the 25 specialized groups affiliated
with the UPA, 21 are working towards the organization of a more
orderly marketing system, namely through the implementation of joint
plans, and of production development. Four of them bring together
farmers with common aspirations.
moral interestsof the 7300 maple businesses comprising its membership. It represents men and women who have chosen to work together by opting for the collective approach as the best way to market their product.
Since 1989, FPAQ has administered a joint plan through which it controls the production and marketing of maple sap concentrate. The plan provides for the regulation of maple syrup production through a quota system, quality control over the 150,000 barrels of maple syrup produced annually in Quebec, collective marketing of bulk maple syrup through a sales agency set up in 2002, administration of cash advance and payment programs on behalf of maple syrup producers, and the maintenance of stocks of pasteurized maple syrup. Thanks to this plan, Quebec’s producers have centralized all bulk sales of maple syrup. The marketing regulation requires all producers to deliver their syrup to authorized buyers or directly to the Federation’s warehouses.
FPAQ is active in promoting and developing markets for maple products both in Quebec and around the world. It also participates in a variety of research and knowledge transfer initiatives, primarily through its association with the ACER Centre.
Quebec produces nearly 76 per cent of the world’s maple syrup, and 91 per cent of Canadian production. It is also a leader in the manufacture of maple equipment. This is truly an expanding industry, as both production and market share just keep growing.
In 2007 the value of the maple syrup harvest was estimated at $136 million. Exports are an increasingly important factor, with 10 per cent growth in 2006 and 13 per cent the year after. Maple syrup products were sold in 48 countries in 2007. Nearly 85 per cent of Quebec’s annual production is sold in bulk to packing and processing companies, as well as to buyers and exporters that redistribute maple products in bulk or pre-packaged form. These products are sold for example to grocery stores, supermarkets or gift shops.
The last few years have seen steady growth in sales both here and around the world. To meet the demand, production quotas were raised by 34 per cent in 2008, allowing many businesses to consolidate operations and bringing 166 new producers into the Federation. Further increases are expected in the near future.

FÉDÉRATION
DES AGRICULTRICES DU QUÉBEC
An ever growing presence
Created in 1987, the Fédération
des agricultrices du Québec brings together 12 regional
syndicates. The recognition of women’s work in agriculture
tops the Fédération’s objective, |
which concerns itself
with such issues as women’s access to farm ownership, farm
financing, work conditions and the quality of life in farming environments.
The Fédération is also involved in issues concerning
family policies, farm labour and health and safety prevention on
the farm.
Its
mission:
Under the leadership of
the Fédération, farmers’ unionism was greatly enhanced by the presence
of a growing.

production sectors. Its primary mission is to
initiate and support actions to promote the development of organic
farming in Québec. It can be said that organic products have
made a place for themselves on consumer tables. In 2006, there were 790 farms in Quebec that were certified organic, while 127 farms practise organic agriculture but were still awaiting full certification,
but it is estimated that 3,000 will be needed within the next five
year to meet consumer demands. To reach that figure, the means of
practicing organic farming need to be made available, know-how circulated
and the marketing of organic products organized. The Fédération
also wants to ensure that consumers can easily identify Québec
organic products and continue to trust that label.
